thomas@axon.rutgers.edu Jennifer
is a graduate student in the Integrative Neuroscience Program. She received
her bachelor’s degree in biology from Colgate University in 1996,
and shortly thereafter joined the Infancy Studies Laboratory at Rutgers
as laboratory manager. Her interest in brain development and behavior
was strengthened during the time she worked in the lab, and led her
to apply to and join the doctoral program at the Center for Molecular
and Behavioral Neuroscience at Rutgers, Newark. Her master’s level
project was titled “Developmental Changes in Rapid Auditory Processing
in Rats with Induced Cerebrocortical Microgyria”, and explored
age-related changes in sound processing abilities in an animal model.
Jennifer’s dissertation experiments,
under the guidance of Dr. Benasich, also focus on developmental changes
in sound processing, comparing adults and children ages 6 to 9 yrs.
In addition, she will examine the modulatory effects of attention and
discrimination training on rapid auditory processing through the use
of event related potentials and behavioral tasks. In these studies,
Jennifer will compare children with a language learning impairment (LLI)
to children with normal language skills in order to identify potential
differences in ERP waveforms between these two groups. Together, these
studies aim to facilitate a better understanding of the relations between
rapid auditory processing and language, specifically with regard to
development, attentional mechanisms, and neural plasticity.
