Susan Marken is Resource Development Coordinator and research assistant at the Infancy Studies Laboratory at the Center for Molecular and Behavioral Neuroscience, Rutgers University, Newark, NJ. She received her B.A. in Philosophy from the college of William & Mary in Virginia, and her M.A. from the University of Wisconsin – Madison in 1984. Her work there focused on the philosophy of mind, philosophy of language, and aesthetics; her Master's thesis involved using a theory of perception to explore how a viewer perceives a work of art. She continued working in these areas toward her Ph.D., but left the academic world to raise a family. She spent the next 20 years as a full-time stay at home Mom for three lively and energetic children – the hardest job, but the most valuable one – and as the volunteer small-group coordinator and women's ministry co-director in various churches. In a return to academia, she joined the Infancy Studies Lab in 2004, and is currently involved in recruiting families to participate in many of our studies. She is active in the MRI component of our studies, in behavioral tests of cognitive and language development, and is also assisting in a genetics study of language, reading and processing difficulties in extended families with a history of language impairments. She and her family enjoy traveling, making music, and kayaking together. She can't wait to see where their next adventure will take them.
