Facilitating Early Auditory Processing
3 months to 12 months
The Infancy Studies Laboratory
is beginning an exciting new study that draws upon recent
breakthroughs in our knowledge about language development to
answer the question of whether early intervention can enhance
the way the infant brain prepares for language during the
first months of life. The principal aim of this project is to examine the hypothesis that infants exposed to specific types of auditory stimulation over the first year of life may become more efficient sound processors. We are studying the effects of increased experience discriminating between different sounds early in life and how that might optimize later language development. We have preliminary evidence suggesting that structured exposure to tone patterns and sound sweeps may enhance cognitive and language outcomes over time by guiding the infant's brain to focus on the types of rapid sounds critical to setting up language maps. Our long-term goal is to develop an intervention that will increase processing efficiency during the critical early periods of language development. Participation If you have an infant between
the ages of 3 months and 1 year and would like to join us in this
exciting endeavor, please contact us. We look forward to speaking
with you!
